Garrison Steel Opens Training Center

Garrison Steel Inc. recently opened a hands-on workshop at its headquarters in Pell City, Ala., to complement the Core and Introduction to Ironworker classes it is holding at nearby Jefferson State Community College. The inaugural class of high school students includes 22 seniors, who are set to complete the program in May with Level 1 Ironworker credentials.

Garrison Steel is using the SEAA/NCCER Ironworker Craft Training Program. Following eight weeks of classroom instruction, students will spend another eight weeks at the new hands-on workshop to learning practical skills such as welding, oxy fuel cutting, rigging, and crane familiarity. Garrison acknowledges the generosity of NUCOR Steel, NexAir, Lincoln Electric, Cobb Wire Rope and Sling and Service Construction Supply for donating supplies and equipment.

“This high school program is a first step in introducing a new generation about the rewarding and financially viable careers to be found in construction,” said John Garrison, CEO. “Next is creating distance learning to reach incumbent workers seeking to upgrade their skills,” he added.
