Our Site crew is currently preparing a 147-acre site for a new one-million-square-foot warehouse. Our scope involves earthwork, stormwater management, sanitary sewer installation, fire line establishment and improvements to Coverstone Drive. Additionally, we are rough-grading two additional building pads and enhancing a VDOT highway. This enhancement includes constructing a complex 140-by-40-foot cast-in-place box culvert along Route 50. Paving preparation is scheduled to begin this month, with all remaining tasks, including paving, topsoil and finishes, expected to be completed by December.

During Construction Safety Week, we recognize the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in ensuring the safety of our workers. From hard hats and gloves to safety glasses, long pants and steel-toe boots, PPE encompasses a range of gear designed to mitigate specific hazards that could be present in a construction setting. By adhering to PPE guidelines, our employees not only enhance their own safety but also uphold the well-being of our entire team. This diagram illustrates the typical attire required on a Kinsley Construction job site, symbolizing the layers of protection essential for reducing risks and promoting a culture of safety.

Happy retirement, Tom! Tom was employed with our Site team for a total of 32 years. He retired as an equipment operator instructor but also served as a crew member and a foreman throughout his tenure. He’s going to miss the camaraderie with the guys and hopes they keep in touch. Additionally, he wanted us to highlight that “Bob Kinsley was a man of vision. He knew what he wanted and could see how to get there. I always appreciated that, and fortunately, his son, Chris, has the same gift.” Tom also shared a bit of wisdom for current and future trainees: “Put your nose to the grindstone and you will do well. Kinsley has always done right by me.” Speaking with the guys who worked with Tom over the years, we learned he wasn’t just good at his job; he was also a great human - always patient and never angry. “Tom is a great teacher. If you didn’t learn something from him, you didn’t want to learn. He taught us the right way…the Robert A. Kinsley way.” When asked about his character, it became obvious that he will be greatly missed. “He is just an all-around good guy. Back in the day, before the equipment had cabs, he made sure we were taken care of. If you were working for him in the bitter cold, he made sure you got a break so you could get warm; he’d even finish the job himself. In the summer heat, it was the same. He was always there with a bottle of water, making sure the job wasn’t any harder than it needed to be. I hate to see him go and wish we had more like him!” Now that he is retired, Tom looks forward to riding his Harley and traveling as much as possible. He’s explored the East Coast and California, and now he’s determined to see everything in between, particularly Badlands and Yellowstone National Parks, with Alaska being the ultimate goal. In addition to traveling, Tom also looks forward to spending more time with his daughter and being entertained by his two Beabulls, Duke and Lucy. Thank you for your years of service; we hope you have a great retirement, Tom!

Happy retirement, Cliff! Cliff was employed with our Utilities and Kinsley Materials teams for a total of 39 years. He retired as the general superintendent of our precast plant but has worked on bridges, buildings, retaining walls and anything else you can think of. He has experienced just about everything Kinsley Construction offers; “I like the challenge of learning and experiencing something new, so I’ve moved around quite a bit.” Like most people we talk to, he is going to miss the people and has nothing but kind words for the organization and the family. “The Kinsleys are great people. They would do anything for you, have always supported my family and were incredibly good to me. Bob was a bit hard to keep up with at times, but you couldn’t help but admire him. Both my boys work here – Corey and Derrick – and I can’t say how much I appreciate having the opportunity to work beside them and watch them grow.” After decades of service, there were a lot of people with a lot of great things to say. Regarding Cliff’s work, “He is one heck of a craftsman – wood, concrete, brick – it doesn’t matter. He managed all the utility restoration work – fixing porches, sidewalks, stamped concrete patios, you name it – with impeccable quality. He kept even the most difficult personality happy.” In addition to being valued, he is also clearly admired “Cliff is happy-go-lucky, always cheerful and just enjoys life. He’s also a family man who loves spending time with his wife, kids and grandkids.” We would be remiss if we also didn’t note his love of cooking. “He donated his time to cook for various community events, serving up to 100 people! Don’t forget about us, Cliff…you’ll now have the time to bring us lots of good food.” Now that he is retired, Cliff and his wife, Sandy, are looking forward to traveling. They’re heading down to Florida to visit with his brothers before traveling the coast and, at some point, will take a train to Tennessee. He knows he’ll keep busy – whether it’s fishing, crabbing or throwing darts and drinking beer with his buddies. He’s also looking forward to spending quality time with his daughter, Carrie. Thank you for your years of service; we hope you have a great retirement, Cliff!
